Everyone knows about the benefits of gardening and being outdoors, so when an under-used site became available here at Millthorpe, Applefields jumped at the chance of taking it on.

The group of Applefields students who attend the Satellite Provision (Millthorpe Site) have taken to the project with great enthusiasm. The students benefit from attending mainstream inclusion lessons with mainstream students as well as having some curriculum lessons in the Satellite base.

Although still in its early stages, they have already constructed a perimeter fence with the help of Mr Bunting, the school’s Design Technology Technician. He came up with a design that all our students have had a hand in making. They all know how to use a drill and screwdriver now!

Emma Morgan, the Applefields’ Teaching Assistant, said “Our aim is to provide an area that nurtures wildlife, includes a sensory garden and allows us to grow edibles, as well as creating a place that encourages wellbeing.

“Applefields Millthorpe students also take part in work-related learning lessons, so they have picked up a huge variety of skills they can use when preparing for adult life.”

So far, the students have planted peas, green beans, chard, strawberries in early May, with many more plants to come.

You can see the transformation in the before and after photos below. Well done to all our students for getting behind a fab project that benefits all of us!
