A message from Ms Greenhalgh
It’s hard to believe we all arrived at school in the snow this morning and are leaving in the sunshine! Hopefully the nice weather will continue into the weekend.
As you will be aware, national strike action by the National Education Union (NEU) is planned for Wednesday 15 March and Thursday 16 March. On both these days, we will only be able to open to vulnerable students and students in Years 7 and 11. Please refer to the letter which was sent out earlier this week for further information.
We’re looking forward to the Spring Concert next Tuesday (more details below). I know everyone has been working really hard in preparation for the event, so please do come along to support our wonderful students. Next week is also British Science Week and I know the Science Faculty have great plans for our students in Years 7-9.
There are some great opportunities for our young people and their families featured in this week’s email – please do have a look and also let us know if you would like to publicise anything which would benefit members of our school community.
We’re back on Monday with a ‘B’ Week. I hope you have a great weekend.
Kind regards
Gemma Greenhalgh
Headteacher
Young Carers Action Day
Mrs Cole and Miss Forrester have delivered assemblies to all year groups this week on ‘Time to Talk’, the theme of this year’s Young Carers Action Day. We have recently surveyed every student in the school and have learnt of a huge increase in the numbers of Young Carers amongst our school community. Once again, our students have responded so maturely to this topic and have shown a keen interest in raising awareness of the support our Young Carers benefit from.
Ramadan 2023
In order to support our Muslim students who may be observing Ramadan, please complete this short Google Form to let us know how we can support them during this holy month.
Spring Concert
Our Spring Concert takes place next week on Tuesday 14 March at 7.00pm in the Main Hall. Featuring performances and dances from Millthorpe’s finest, it promises to be a great evening.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Sponsored Readathon
Thank you to all our Year 7 and 8 students who took part in the sponsored Readathon last week as part of our World Book Week celebrations. Thank you also to everyone who has kindly donated so far.
To date, we’ve raised over £400 for the Read for Good charity, and we’d love to get the total up if we can! Donations can still be made online or cash can be given to Ms Brooks in the library.
British Science Week
British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. This year’s theme is ‘Connections’. For 2023, British Science Week will take place between 10-19 March. As we celebrate togetherness, after a period where isolation was a sad but necessary reality, ‘Connections’ is an apt theme for British Science Week 2023.
Nearly all innovations in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are built on connections between people; two (or more) heads are better than one, after all!
We hope the students enjoy these lessons and we are looking forward to sharing this with you.
Millthorpian stars in ITV’s ‘The Bay’
Arthur Kay in Year 10 is currently starring in Season 4 of ITV’s crime drama ‘The Bay’.
Playing a character called Lewis, Arthur’s character can be seen in all six episodes, popping up in some more than others!
Great work Arthur, we’ll all be watching!
Social media
Many of you will already follow us on Twitter and the beady-eyed amongst you will have noticed we have updated our Twitter handle to @MillthorpeSch. Do give us a follow if you don’t already!
We’re also excited to let you know that you can now find us on both Facebook and Instagram too, so whichever social media platform you favour, you can keep up with our news, student successes and achievements.
