Here at Millthorpe, we are committed to meeting the needs of young carers so that they can attend and enjoy school in the same way as other students and achieve their potential.
We have a designated Young Carers’ School Lead, Mrs Cole, who has responsibility for young carers and their families and she works closely with Mrs Hurst, our Young Carers Operational Lead. We make pupils and families aware of who this is and how to contact them to access support.
Once a young carer is identified, the school will contact parents to request signed permission to work alongside the carer. We only share information with professionals and agencies on a need to know basis in order to support pupils and their families. The school has an effective referral system and strong partnerships in place with relevant external agencies, including the school nurse and the local young carers’ service.
Millthorpe actively seeks feedback and ideas from young carers and their families to shape and improve support via the #MYC meetings, and conversations with parents.
