A message from Ms Greenhalgh
It definitely feels like the term is in full swing now with everyone settled into their new routines and lots of enthusiastic learning and teaching taking place. The children have continued to be friendly, positive and ready to learn this week and lunchtimes have been smooth and calm.
We are always keen to celebrate success and as such we have started pulling together news items for our first Millthorpe Messenger of the year and would love to hear from you! If your child has any good news to share, be it sporting success, winning awards, raising money for charity, taking part in a sponsored event or anything else, please email news@millthorpe.southbank.academy with your submissions.
There seems to be a whole host of activities happening in York this weekend, including the last Balloon Fiesta to be held in York, so whatever you are doing, have fun and we’ll see everyone back at school on Monday.

Support with attendance
Schools from across the City of York have been working together to put together advice and support for parents and students around attendance.

If your child is struggling to attend school, whatever the reason, please talk to us.
Southlands Road entrance
Please note that a new modern and secure fence and gate are being installed at the Southlands Road entrance starting next week, so from Monday access will be via the front (Nunthorpe Avenue) or rear (Philadelphia Terrace) entrances only. We’ll let students and families know once the new gate is ready for use.
Open Evening
We will be holding our Open Evening for Year 5/6 students and their families on Tuesday 11 October, from 6.00-8.00pm.
On the evening, you can hear from Headteacher, Ms Greenhalgh and some of the key staff that work across the school, meet students and staff, experience a range of activities in our different subject areas and find out how we can support your child to be happy and successful.
All are welcome and there is no need to book.
Millthorpe Maths
We are delighted with the way students have started the new academic year.
Please click here to see this week’s Millthorpe Maths newsletter. This week it contains a little peek at what Year 8 have been up to. There are also a few retrieval questions, suitable for all year groups, students may like to try. In addition, we are delighted to offer all students the chance to show us their maths puzzling skills in the ‘Fun Zone’. Any students that can complete the puzzle will receive a Reward stamp on presentation of the solution at the Maths Office – first correct solution receives a prize.
Virtual Art Gallery
Our Virtual Gallery of student artwork is now live on the school website. Take a look to see the amazing pieces produced by last year’s Year 11 students as part of their GCSE coursework.
Year 11 Computer Science
The resources/lessons for Year 11 Computer Science students have been uploaded to their respective Google classrooms (all students have been shown where), to support students who may not be in school or would like to do some extra revision to support their learning.
Students’ homework is posted on Google classroom and has been scheduled up until Easter 2023. We will ensure students are reminded in lessons and I would ask you to please support us with this by reminding your child.
We are running revision sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday after school in PC1 and would ask you to encourage your child to attend one of these sessions. We are also running an extended revision session on Thursdays after school to support students with specific questions/areas of the specification.
Rowntree Park
If your child ever uses Rowntree Park, The Friends of Rowntree Park would love them to share their views using this online survey. The survey is aimed at children ages 10-16, will take just a couple of minutes to complete and could lead to change!
An older girl focus group is also running on Saturday 1 October from 4.00-5.00pm to get views on how to improve the park in order to get more teen girls using it. This will be an informal gathering with lots of hammocks and chat. The group’s views can really make a difference. This is free to attend but please book places in advance.

National Online Safety have produced this excellent guide to Google Chromebooks. Please take a look if your child uses this device.
LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art)
The LAMDA class on Thursdays after school takes place in the drama hall and involves developing drama skills and confidence through activities, games and working on drama scenes. The class can lead to graded exams where you can develop a range of essential life and performance skills. LAMDA offer exams in Acting, Communication and Musical Theatre. Exams are not compulsory.

Students performing in upcoming productions
Some of our students are taking to the boards this December, performing in two theatre productions: The Sound of Music and Nativity the Musical.
Freddie and Freya in Year 8, Evie Rose in Year 9 and Poppy in Year 10 amongst others, would love you to go along to see them in action!

They operate an out-of-hours service so concerns can be raised with them at any time.
