A message from Ms Greenhalgh
I hope you all had a lovely half-term break. It’s been great to see everyone back at school this week.
Our students have been hard at work, particularly our Year 11s who are preparing for their Pre-Public Exams (PPEs) which take place from 14-25 November. Next week we’re looking forward to meeting parents/carers at the Year 8 Parents’ Evening on 9 November. We will also be talking to the students about Remembrance and observing a two-minute silence at 11am on Friday 11 November. Please take a look at the information about our Millthorpe Remembers project below and get involved if you can. Rehearsals for our school production, Mary Poppins, will continue next week. I’ve been speaking to some of the cast and crew and it sounds as if it’s coming together beautifully! The show will take to the stage on 13-15 December – further details about booking will follow soon.

Millthorpe Remembers 2022
On the centenary anniversary of the end of the First World War in 2018, Millthorpe School students, staff and parents were asked to make and dedicate a poppy to a serviceperson who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The response was amazing, and we were able to produce a breath-taking display of poppies.
Sadly, the display has been lost amongst the challenges of the last few years, so we are therefore calling on all of our students, staff, and parents/carers to ask you to make another poppy (or your first if you/your child is new to the school), so that we can rebuild this magnificent display and ensure that Millthorpe School “Never forgets.”

Gates
Please note that the Southlands Road and Philadelphia Terrace gates are open between 8.30-8.45am each morning. After 8.45am, students need to come to the main Nunthorpe Avenue entrance and press the buzzer. Gates need to be closed promptly at 8.45am for safety and security reasons as they are not supervised after this time.
Year 8 Parents’ Evening
A reminder that the Year 8 Parents’ Evening will take place on Wednesday 9 November from 4.00-6:30pm. All appointments will take place either in the Main Hall or the two adjacent classrooms.
Sports practices
The following sports practices will take place this half-term until Christmas:
All are welcome to attend, no experience is necessary! The aim is to have fun and enjoy being active and moving.
Students are not required to get changed for lunch practices, they can just turn up with appropriate footwear for their sport eg trainers or football boots. Students attending after-school clubs must get changed into their kit.
Please note that this rota may change due to matches after school and will usually change each half term.
Young Writers
You may have read our article in the Millthorpe Messenger about our Young Writers whose work is to be published in the forthcoming ‘Twisted Tales.’ Apologies go to Ella Clarke who we omitted from the list and to Finn Davies who we incorrectly listed as Erinn Davies. Congratulations to you both on your great work!
Opportunity to join Northern Gas Networks’ Young Innovators Council
Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is inviting young people aged 14-19 to apply to join the third year of their Young Innovators Council (YIC).
The YIC is the voice of young people at Northern Gas Networks. It gives the young people involved a unique opportunity to kickstart a career in the world of business by working with a major energy industry company. Together we will ensure their thoughts and opinions are put at the heart of the business’ decision making.
The YIC has done some exceptional work over the last two years, exploring topics such as sustainability, CO safety, and the future of energy in this country. It is now entering its third year, and they are looking for more brilliant young people. The YIC 2023 will be made up of 40 young people who will meet (virtually) with NGN staff and expert witnesses over four sessions. They will learn about different aspects of the business, discussing and giving honest feedback on emerging strategies.

#WakeUpWednesday – A parent and carer guide to Amigo
Amigo is a social platform which purports to connect strangers from around the world – and, with built-in translation software, it reduces the expected language barriers. Focusing heavily on one-to-one chat, video calls and live streams, Amigo encourages its users to build up online relationships to unlock exclusive features such as private video and audio calls: essentially, the more that people chat, the more features become available to them. This is an app designed with mature users very much in mind and is therefore definitely not recommended for children.
In this guide, you’ll find tips on a number of potential risks such as inappropriate contact, strangers and membership costs.
Holiday Activities and Food Programme update
During the Christmas, Easter and summer school holidays the Holiday Activities and Food, (HAF), programme provides a range of energetic physical activities, exciting new experiences and a healthy meal for young people aged 4 -16 years and eligible for Free School Meals.

If you have significant concerns for the welfare of a child, in addition to being able to contact Mrs Cole or Ms Simpson during school hours by emailing safeguarding@millthorpe.southbank.academy, you may wish to make direct contact with the York MASH (Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub) on T: 01904 551900, option 3. They operate an out-of-hours service so concerns can be raised with them at any time.
