A message from Ms Greenhalgh

Earlier this week, we enjoyed meeting parents and carers at our Year 10 Parents’ Evening. Thanks to all who came along. Next week, our Year 11s will sit their pre-public exams (PPEs); these will continue until 3 February. We wish all our Year 11s the very best of luck!

We’re looking forward to chatting to parents, carers and our Year 9 students at our Options Evening next Wednesday. This is an opportunity to find out about the options available at exam level and the options process. There will be two presentations in the main hall, the first at 5.30pm-6pm, the second at 6.15pm- 6.45pm and subject teachers will be available throughout the evening to discuss their courses. If anyone needs any further information, please contact Mrs Armitage.

I’m sure you will have heard in the news about the upcoming industrial action for NEU members. We will keep you informed once we know more, please see below for information to date.

Wishing everyone a very happy weekend. We’ll see everyone back at school on Monday for a ‘B’ Week.

Kind regards

Gemma Greenhalgh
Headteacher

Industrial Action by the NEU

As you are no doubt aware, the NEU has announced a day of industrial action for teaching members on Wednesday 1 February, as well as three days during next half term (28 February, 15 March and 16 March).

We are in the process of planning for the potential impact this may have on Millthorpe. As colleagues are not required to inform the school in advance whether it is their intention to work on this day, we are not yet in a position to say definitively what arrangements will be needed. If a partial closure is necessary, in line with DfE and Local Authority guidance, we will be prioritising vulnerable students and students in Year 11 approaching their GCSEs. We will share more specific information with families as soon as we are able to do so.

SENCo details

Please note that Merry Wright is taking on the role of SENCo until the end of the academic year. Please contact Merry with any queries relating to SENd at m.wright@millthorpe.southbank.academy.

For this period, Scott Atkinson is taking on the role of Subject Leader of Geography and Sara Bowland and Ruth Lingard are taking on the role of Head of Faculty, Humanities.

RSC Shakespeare Schools’ Festival – ‘The Merchant of Venice’

As part of the extra-curricular Drama programme here at Millthorpe, Key Stage 3 students have the chance to perform in a production of ‘The Merchant of Venice’ by William Shakespeare. This will take place on 28 March at York Theatre Royal on their main stage as part of the RSC Shakespeare Schools’ Festival.

If students wish to take part in this fantastic opportunity, workshops will begin on Tuesday 24 January in the Drama Hall at 3.30-4:30pm, with further rehearsals taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 4:30pm in the subsequent weeks. Students wishing to be involved must be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school to attend rehearsals and on the performance date, the evening of 28 March.

Please come along to the Drama Hall next Tuesday if you would like to be involved – there is no need to prepare an audition piece in advance, we will cast through workshop participation. All students in Years 7-9 are welcome.

Looking forward to seeing lots of you there!

North Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Event

Well done to our three representatives who competed against the best runners in their age category across the whole of North Yorkshire last weekend in Skipton.

The course was very hilly and boggy, making running conditions incredibly tricky, but despite the adverse conditions all three runners did extremely well.

  • Juliette Macquin-Jones (Y7) – 11th
  • Leo Forsdyke (Y7) -11th
  • Isla Forsdyke (Y10) – 37th

Well done to all!

CyberFirst opportunities for girls

There’s never been a better time to explore what a career in cyber security has to offer. Estimates show that there are in the region of 100,000 unfilled cyber security roles in the UK as half of businesses still lack the technical know-how to protect against cyber-attacks and critical security breaches. People, businesses and institutions all over the world are relying on cyber security professionals.

Inspired and led by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a part of GCHQ, CyberFirst are on a mission to make careers in cyber security as accessible as possible. Girls in Years 8 and 9 in England and Wales, can join free cyber security development days running throughout February and March 2023.

The CyberFirst Girls Development Day initiative is designed to increase understanding of the different specialisms within cyber security and equip girls with valuable, in-demand skills.

There is a series of fun, interactive, face-to-face, one-day courses as well as virtual courses, to choose from. On the day, the girls will be role playing as cyber security experts working for a fictitious app company, Sirius Cyberworks. Unfortunately, disaster has struck and there has been a serious breach of the company network – a new flagship app has been leaked. The girls’ role is to work through four different parts of the company, uncovering how the leak happened whilst learning new cyber skills along the way.
