A message from Ms Greenhalgh

Great news! Our Year 9 football team who are now York & District Schools Champions after a stunning 6-0 win in the final on Wednesday evening. They played incredibly well andΒ their team spirit shone through. Also this week, some of our students took to the stage at the Theatre Royal as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company Schools Festival. They performed like pros and I know Mrs Sladen is super-proud of everyone, as am I!Β You can read all about these events and successes and more in fullΒ in the Millthorpe Messenger which will land in your inboxes tomorrow.

Our Year 7-10 students attended a Careers Fair in school this week, and had the opportunity to speak to a number of local post-16 schools, colleges and universities, apprenticeship providers and employers. Thank you to everyone who supported the event – we obviously couldn’t do it without them!

Just a reminderΒ ahead of the summer term that there will be an additional bank holiday onΒ Monday 8 MayΒ for the King’s Coronation.

I’ll look forward to seeing students again onΒ Monday 17 April, for an ‘A’ Week and a brand new term!Β I hope everyone has a lovely Easter break.

With best wishes,

Gemma Greenhalgh
Headteacher

Summer arrangements for break and lunchtimes

Following feedback from students, we will be opening up the hockey pitch at lunch time, where picnic benches will be provided, for the remainder of this academic year. This will be explained to students on the first day back after Easter and we look forward to seeing students enjoying some warmerΒ weather and socialising with friends in our lovely green spaces.

Students will be shownΒ this video from Mr BaybuttΒ which explains the new plans on the return to school on Monday 17 April.

Students look to the future at Careers Fair

On Tuesday we welcomed in a variety of post-16 providers and employers to take part in a careers fair. Students from Years 7-10 were invited to the hall to discuss potential career paths and to have the opportunity to ask questions about what skills may be required for the workplace. StudentsΒ were also encouraged to ask about what jobs within each industryΒ involved and some even got to try on the protectiveΒ clothing needed in some areas. We were also delightedΒ to be able to welcome back some Old Millthorpians who answered questions on theirΒ own career paths since leaving Millthorpe.

A huge thank you to all our employers who gave up theirΒ time to come in and support our students; we are very grateful.

PE – update on sport provision for the summer term

It has been an absolute pleasure for the PE department to work with your children through the winter programme of study. When we arrive back to school after the Easter break, we will be starting our summer programme which will involve activities such as athletics, cricket, tennis, rounders and softball.

The students are requested to wear their white PE tops, blue shorts, white socks and trainers for all of their sports which will mainly take place on the school field. We do not expect studentsΒ to wear their reversible PE tops during the summer programme. (It is fine to send your child with this top if you feel as though the weather is likely to be cold and that itΒ may make theirΒ PE experience more positive. The same applies to joggers).

On occasions we may ask students to bring in their football boots as some of our delivery may be carried out on the astro pitch to give the groups space to perform. The individual PE teachers will communicate this to their students.

We will tellΒ each PE group whatΒ sport they are starting with and theΒ venue where they are to get changed onΒ theΒ first Monday back after the EasterΒ break. (All students will be bringing in the same PE kit regardlessΒ of the sport they will be starting on).

We look forward to working with our PE groups through the summer term and hope for some fine weather. Have a lovely Easter.

Mr Boothman and the PE department

Sports practices

The following sports practices are takingΒ place this half-term:

Please look out for some additions after the break too.

All are welcome to attend, no experience is necessary! The aim is to have fun and enjoy being active and moving.

Normal PE/games kit is required and students must have appropriate footwear for their sport eg trainers or football boots.Β Lunch passes are available and are encouraged. Students should collect them from their teacher.

Please note that this rota may change due to matches after school and usually changes each half term.

Lost property

Once again, we have gathered numerous items of lost property including a selection of coats, shoes, pieces ofΒ uniform andΒ PE kits. Anything which isn’t collected byΒ Friday 21 AprilΒ will be donated to the school’s Eco Laundry, so if your child is missing any items, please encourage them to go to the school office to have a look.

Calling ‘Old Millthorpians’

Are you an ‘Old Millthorpian’? If so we’d love to hear from you!Β We’d love to invite you to come in to speak to our students and talk to them about your career so far and perhaps a bit about your time at Millthorpe (or Mill Mount or Nunthorpe School).

Just email Sarah Watts, our Careers Lead E:Β s.watts@millthorpe.southbank.academyΒ with details ofΒ where you are now, what your job is and a bit about your journey since you left school – we can’t wait to hear from you!

Charity coffee morning

Earlier this week the Connect pupils held a charity coffee morning. The pupils chose two charities to donate money to: Help for Heroes and Cancer Research UK.

TheyΒ were able to tell staff about why they had chosen these charities and also provided an abundance of homemade cakes.

Once all the money is in and counted they hope to have raised around Β£60. Great job everyone!

National Citizen Service (NCS)

NCSΒ is a government funded residential programme aimed at 15-17 year olds which takes place in the summer. Sign-ups for our new NCS programme are now open and we’re told that spaces are filling up fast.

The programme has been specially designed to enhance a student’s potential, transforming their summer break into an opportunity to make an impact, learn new skills and prepare for work and life. Some of our past students have taken part in this fantastic opportunity and loved every minute of it!

You can find out more in thisΒ NCS videoΒ or in thisΒ leaflet for parents/carers. Students can also read more in thisΒ leaflet for young people.
