A message from Ms Greenhalgh

It’s been a busy week for our Year 11s with the commencement of this year’s exams. We have been absolutely delighted with the attitude, conduct and punctuality of every single Year 11 student in the first week of their GCSEs. They have approached this week in exemplary fashion and we have been so proud of them. Mr Wilson, our Examinations Officer, spoke to the students ahead of their Maths exam this morning to praise them, but we wanted you to know too.

We are providing cereal, breakfast bars, fruit and water and Year 11 students are welcome to come onto the school site from 8am and get a bite to eat in the dining hall before their exams or revision sessions.

Keep it up Year 11 – there are just a few weeks to go! The GCSE timetable can be seen here.

As we look forward to another Careers event next week, this time for our Year 10s, I’d like to thank those ex-students who have been in touch to let us know where they are now. I know some of them have offered to give their time to come in to speak to our students, which is hugely appreciated. You can read about some of our alumni here and if you are an ex-student of either Millthorpe or Nunthorpe School, we’d love to hear from you – just drop Miss Watts an email.

Congratulations to all those who have received a golden ticket this week and to the students who enjoyed hot chocolate and a sweet treat with Miss Boyd and Mrs Rothenburg earlier today having been nominated by their faculty. Well done to Brody, Reuben, Cora, Rosie, Jorja, Lewis, Jess, Bradley and Sophie.

We’ll see everyone in school on Monday with a ‘B’ Week, and the last week of this half-term. Have a lovely weekend!

With best wishes,

Gemma Greenhalgh
Headteacher

Year 11 revision sessions

With GCSE exams well underway, we’d like to remind our Year 11 students and their parents/carers that full attendance is required for revision sessions please.

Experience tells us that the provision of revision sessions in school is more effective than individual study leave, so we have put a huge amount of time and effort into making sure the revision timetables fit around the students’ exams and that the content is finely tuned to the programme specifications. Our expert teaching colleagues are delivering well-planned sessions, providing the perfect opportunity for students to ask those last-minute questions. Please make sure your child attends and gets the best from these sessions.

End of year exams

As we are now well into our summer term, we would like to inform you about the upcoming end of year exams for each year group.

Key Stage 3 students (Years 7-9) will sit their exams within their classrooms during the weeks commencing:

  • 5 June – Year 9
  • 12 June – Year 7 and 8

Year 10 students will sit Pre-Public Exams (PPEs) in the main hall, during the fortnight commencing 12 June. This is to give them experience of sitting their GCSEs in a formal setting.

All exams form part of an incredibly important evaluation process to help us target intervention and inform teaching, and to help students to understand their strengths and areas for development. In support of this, Mr Baybutt will be delivering a study support presentation which highlights the four key revision strategies which we know are proven to embed knowledge into our long-term memory. This is also on the website for parents and carers.

Furthermore, we understand that exams can cause some students to worry excessively and affect their mental health. We encourage any student who feels like this to speak to their tutor or a member of their year team for support.

Year 11 Leavers Assembly – Absolute final call for photos and videos

The date of the Leavers Assembly is to be confirmed as the date originally agreed is no longer suitable. We will confirm this in due course and let the Year 11 students know on the Prom Google Classroom. Thank you.

Year 11 student, Henri C had a fantastic win in the ring on Saturday evening! Henri came out on top, winning the Yorkshire 66-70kg fight with a unanimous decision on the night.

Absolutely brilliant Henri, amazing result!

Year 8s take on work experience

Congratulations to two of our Year 8 students, Leo M and Zephyr S, who have recently completed some work experience which they found out about through the school newsletter!

The boys took part in a seven-week work experience for LNER run by the Start-up Sherpas. They thoroughly enjoyed it and learned lots.

Well done for taking on this challenge boys!

Maths news

Well done to our Year 11s who did their Maths GCSE exam this morning – keep up the hard work. Remember the next two papers are CALCULATOR papers. Please check yours is working!

Here’s another weekend brain teaser too…
You have three bags, each containing two marbles. Bag A contains two white marbles, Bag B contains two black marbles, and Bag C contains one white marble and one black marble. You pick a random bag and take out one marble. It is a white marble. What is the probability that the remaining marble from the same bag is also white?

Mr Hunt runs Leeds Marathon for charity

Huge congratulations to Mr Hunt, Deputy Head of Year 11, who successfully completed the Leeds Marathon last Sunday and raised vital funds for local charity, Children Today.

Alex fundraises for World Scout Jamboree

You might remember that several Millthorpe students have been selected to attend the next World Scout Jamboree in South Korea this summer. Their exciting adventure is coming closer and the scouts have all been busy fundraising for their trips.

One of the students, Alex How, in Year 11, is organising an evening of tales of adventure. The evening will feature five adventure talks from local people. An entertaining and inspiring evening is guaranteed.

“Just Popping Out” will be on Friday 26 May at St Edward the Confessor Church in Dringhouses. Full details are in the poster below. Tickets are £10 (£5 for children) and are available from www.trybooking.com/CIUX. Alex would greatly appreciate your support.
