Enrichment activities

From September 2025, at the end of every school day, from 2.45-3.30pm, we will offer a wide range of high-quality enrichment activities to allow students to develop as individuals, stay healthy, support their academic progress and make their school experience more memorable and enjoyable.

Although attendance at enrichment activities is not compulsory, we hope that most students will access a range of activities across the week.

MONDAY – CLUBS

Basketball

Monday | 2.45-3.30pm | Sports HallΒ 

Open to students in all years.

Basketball club is aimed at students who want to improve their skills in basketball. We will be working on all of the key skills, the rules and gameplay. It will take place in the sports hall on a Monday after school. All students are welcome. There will also be an opportunity to represent Millthorpe in the York Schools’ basketball league.

Year 7-8 Girls Football

This session is aimed at all students in Year 7 &8 who wish to develop their football skills through lots of drills and game play. There will be opportunities to represent Millthorpe in friendlies, in the York School’s Football League and in cup matches. All are welcome and it will take place on the astro where PE kit, boots and shin pads are required.Β

Come along and take part in Millthorpe’s very own band every Monday in M1 after school.

Culture Club

Monday | 2.45-3.30pm | A11Β 

This club is for KS3 students who want to explore big ideas, challenge their thinking, and build a deeper understanding of the world around them. We’ll be watching powerful films that dive into important social justice issues.

Debate Club

Monday | 2.45-3.30pm | A3

Open to all students.

Students meet to debate current affairs and other issues. They research, write and deliver speeches, developing the mastery of the art of rhetoric, and take part in formal debates including opening speeches, rebuttals, open debate and closing speeches.

Dungeons and Dragons

Monday | 2.45-3.30pm | Library

An opportunity for students in all years to get together, and play DnD in the library on a Monday after school!

Lego Club

Monday | 2.45-3.30pm | PC2

FIRST LEGO League inspires youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills and showcase what they learned in an external competition against other schools in York. The competition involves a Lego Robotics challenge and a presentation project.Β

Manga

Monday | 2.45-3.30pm | Library

Manga are comics or graphic novels originating from Japan. Most Manga conform to a style developed in Japan in the late 19th Century, and the form has a long history in earlier Japanese art. The term Manga is used in Japan to refer to both comics and cartooning. Students in all year groups are welcome to come along to read and explore some Manga on a Monday in the Library.

Year 7 and 8 Axiom Maths Circle

These sessions are open to our keenest mathematicians in Year 7 and Year 8, with a particular focus on encouraging girls to participate in maths beyond the classroom. There will be interesting problems to investigate and discuss in order to develop stronger mathematical links, reasoning and understanding.Β

Year 10 and 11 Further Maths

Further Maths is an opportunity for our keenest mathematicians to extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the GCSE spec. It is encouraged for anyone wishing to take A Level Maths as a great way to bridge the gap between Year 11 and Year 12. Students regularly attending the sessions will have the option to sit an extra GCSE in the summer of Year 11.

Year 11 Statistics

Statistics is a popular branch of maths with many applications. Students attending these sessions will learn different statistical techniques and applications with the option of sitting an extra GCSE in Statistics in the summer of Year 11.Β

This is a Teaching Assistant supported session, for students to complete their homework. It is open to all year groups and takes place every afternoon after school in PC1.

For KS4 students. Come along for a supported revision session. Create your revision materials ready for the GCSE and have a go at practice questions.Β

Year 11 French Intervention

These sessions will provide extra support to enable students to excel in their exams. We will look at specific exam strategies, including how to reach the grade 5 at Foundation, and the grade 9 at Higher. The sessions will be for named students who are available, and will take place on Mondays in C6.

Year 9/10/11 Netball

Tuesday | 2.45-3.30pm | Netball courts

Aimed at all students in Years 9-11, these sessions are designed to develop core skills, establish key set plays and strategies and to enjoy a game of netball. Students who wish to be selected to represent the school should attend but those who just wish to come and play are always welcome.Β

This session will allow KS3 students to explore a range of creative making techniques from across Fine Art/Design & Technology. Activities ranging from making clay tiles, hand embroidery, printmaking, calligraphy, bullet journaling and more!Β

Crochet Club

This session is a great way to sit together to crochet and knit. Bring your own supplies and projects and enjoy some time together.

Drama Club

Drama Club is open to students from all year groups who want to further develop their skills in the Drama Department Six Cs of Success: Communication, Concentration, Co-operation, Creativity, Commitment and Confidence. We will explore a range of drama activities, performance styles and genres – no previous experience is required, simply a willingness to take part and have fun!

Do you have a passion for films and the latest releases? Come along to Film Club to sample a range of film genres and review how good they are. This is open to all year groups.

Harry Potter Club - Year 7

Tuesday | 2.45-3.30pm | Library

Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by British author JK Rowling. The novels chronicle the lives of a young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Students in Year 7 can come and explore some Harry Potter on a Tuesday after school in the Library.

KS3 STEM Club

Tuesday | 2.45-3.30pm | D Block

This is an opportunity for Year 7, 8 & 9 students to boost their knowledge and experience in Science, Technology, Maths & Engineering (STEM). We will work with practical and theory resources provided by The Royal Academy of Engineering. These projects and themes change four times a year and provide ‘real world’ experience of Engineering and Design applications, careers and future possibilities. This will run for the 1st half-term only, so don’t miss this great opportunity! (24 student capacity)Β

Sign Language Club

Our Sign Language Club is run by two Student Leaders who are passionate about teaching others British Sign Language. Come along and learn a variety of key signs that will build into participants being able to sign whole sentences.

We will explore a range of contemporary, street and jazz dance. This can be shaped by the students who wish to attend.Β

Gardening Club

During September, Spring and Summer we will be gardening the area outside the LSC and also an area at the side of school which has two large beds and a poly tunnel. There is lots of work to do including: planting, replanting, weeding and digging. The rest of the time we will be doing simple crafts. Some will be seasonally related and some will be to make things for the garden.Β

Bouldering Club

Thursday | 2.45-3.30pm | Red Goat

This session is a chance for anyone over 14 years old (or with previous experience at Red Goat) to visit a Bouldering wall and explore what Bouldering is about. We are all born with the desire to seek out challenges have fun and test ourselves both physically and mentally – bouldering as a sport does that as well as being a good starting point for rock climbing. Please note that places are limited to 14.

Feminist Society

Feminist Society is a fantastic opportunity to discuss anything on the topic of feminism! We will have discussion topics, film screenings, fundraising opportunities and chances to lead sessions. FemSoc is a safe space for everyone – you don’t need to have any prior knowledge of feminism, just be willing to discover more and join in!Β

Language ambassadors

Why not join the Language Ambassadors Club on a Thursday after school in C5 where you will be able to explore anything to do with languages, from films, music, learning greetings in unusual languages and getting to know people in other countries. Students who are members of this club will also support the Y5 French Cafe Day that takes place every July.

Writing Club

Creative Writing Club is an excellent opportunity for anyone with an interest in writing to indulge in that passion. We meet every Thursday in PC1, and there are regularly competitions for students to craft entries for, or just work on their own projects. We are lucky enough to have an offer to take part in the Aesthetica Short Film competition again this year, so it’s likely that that will take up our time in the last half term of the year.

This session will allow students to continue with their Art studies either working on their sketchbook work, or using the wide range of techniques available in the workshop to develop and refine their ideas. The work they do will be driven by their own individual journey and progress. This club is open to Year 10 or Year 11 Art students.

Aimed at students in Years 10 and 11 studying GCSE PE, this is an opportunity to refine and develop the key skills required in their chosen sports to help improve their practical grade. Business Leaders

Liaising with the Managing Director and Banqueting Manager of Middlethorpe Hall, students will learn the process of organising an exclusive event at a high end hotel from making the invites and choosing the quest list, to making the canapΓ©s and decorating the room, to hosting the guests. A great way to learn about all the careers available in Hospitality and Catering.Β

Choir

Come along for a fun end to the week – singing together is the best feeling and doing it on a Friday evening at the end of the school week will be a great way to start the weekend. Choir will take place in M1.

Young Carers

This is an opportunity for young carers, who may be caring for a friend or family member who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support, to get together to talk and support each other.

FRIDAY – INTERVENTIONS

Year 11 History Intervention

These sessions are for KS4 students and will provide additional support for all parts of the History GCSE curriculum. We will revisit key content covered in lessons and practice planning, modelling and writing exam style questions. Any areas of the curriculum that you feel you need more help with, can be covered in these sessions.
