National Year of Reading and World Book Day

2026 > February > 10 > National Year of Reading and World Book Day

2026 is the National Year of Reading. This is a widespread initiative which is led by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust to tackle declining reading enjoyment amongst students. Here at Millthorpe School we have encouraged our students to ‘Go All In’ to encourage reading throughout their daily life.

All form groups have spent the last two weeks reading a fiction book during form time, with these texts containing themes and vocabulary which can help support them when studying texts in their English lessons. The students have really engaged with this initiative and is something we are continuing next half term.

We will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 5 March, where students are invited to take part in many different activities during lunchtime and will also be reading in every lesson to mark this celebratory event. Students are encouraged to design a badge containing their favourite character from a book. Templates for these can be collected from the library. Alternatively a template can be printed here – it is recommended to print it on the following settings: image repeat size 8.

If your child particularly enjoys a subject and wants to read around the subject matter being taught, there are reading lists which can help support them to do this. All books on this reading list can be found in the library and we encourage every student to access these throughout their time with us.
