A message from Ms Greenhalgh

It’s definitely beginning to feel a lot like Christmas around school! Our Christmas tree is standing tall in the atrium and we’re looking forward to Christmas Dinner next Wednesday. We are also hosting the Big Sing once again next week, bringingΒ together residents from local sheltered housing schemes with some of ourΒ students for a fun-packed afternoon of singing and music. The guests will be treated to performances by our singers and musicians and will hopefully joinΒ in with some seasonal songs!

We’re very much looking forward to our school production of Mary Poppins Jr which is taking to the stage onΒ 13, 14 and 15 December. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, grab them soon on ParentPay as they are going fast.

Next week in school, some of our students are looking to the future through our Careers events. Year 7s are taking part in a Roots to Success event whilst Year 11 students will be participating in the Exploring Pathways event. We’re also looking forward to welcoming Year 7 parents/carers into school for the Parents Evening on Wednesday.

I hope you all haveΒ a lovely weekend!

Kind regards

Gemma Greenhalgh
Headteacher

Christmas Dinner

OnΒ Wednesday 7 December,Β we will be offering students a Christmas Dinner in the canteen. If your child would like a Christmas Dinner, please pay on ParentPay by close of businessΒ on Monday; they will receive a ticket in form time on Tuesday. This allows us to serve students more quickly as we don’t need to open the tills. You can indicateΒ if your child wishes to have a vegetarian option and/or they have any other dietary requirements.

Please note that there will be limited options other than roast dinner, so if that isn’t your child’s thing, they may wish to bring a pack up or buy food at break time.

Millthorpe Christmas Homeless Charity Appeal and Non-Uniform Day

This week in assembly Ms Greenhalgh launched Millthorpe’s annual Christmas Homeless Charity Appeal. Each tutor group has been given a list of itemsΒ requested from the charities we are supporting. These are SASH, Refugee Action York and Carecent. We would be grateful if all donations could be brought in to school byΒ Friday 9Β DecemberΒ please.

On that day, we will also be holding a non-uniform day to raise money for our chosen charities. Β£1 donationsΒ can be brought in on the day and handed to form tutors or donated via ParentPay.

Basketball team net a fantastic win!

Huge congratulations to ourΒ Year 11 basketball team who won theirΒ first game against Archbishop Holgate’s School this week, with a whopping score ofΒ 49-16.

A super performance from the whole squad – well done all!

Winter coats needed for refugees

Do you have any unused or outgrown unisex or men’s coats, hoodies or sleeping bags taking up space in your home? If so, please donate them to the collection box for Care4Calais in Millthorpe reception. TheyΒ will then be distributed by volunteers to homeless refugees sleeping rough in northern France.

Care4Calais is asking for men’s coats this winter, because cold and wet conditions are descending on the North Atlantic and the refugees face life-threatening exposure in the coming months.Β Small to medium sizes preferred but any will be welcome!

If you don’t have a coat to donate, you can give Β£20 to buy one atΒ care4calais.org/donate

Find out how to start your own clothes collection, raise awareness or volunteer atΒ https://care4calais.org/get-involved/

The collection box will be in the school reception untilΒ 12 December.

National Online Safety – #WakeUpWednesday

There have been a few technical issues, so we have not been able to send you the weekly guides from National Online Safety in recent weeks. We have therefore included the latest threeΒ guides which we think will be very useful to a large number of parents and carers. They coverΒ combatting online bullying, and handy guides to a very popular game and social media channel,Β Call of DutyΒ andΒ TikTok.

Post-16 Taster Days – January 2023

A reminder to our Year 11 students that Post-16 Taster Days take place in lots of institutions across the city onΒ Tuesday 10Β JanuaryΒ orΒ Thursday 12Β January.

If your son/daughter wishes to attend one of themΒ YOU MUST APPLY BY THE DEADLINE OFΒ 5Β DECEMBER (unless otherwise stated). Schools and colleges will not take late bookings.

The attached documentΒ has all the offers in one place, includingΒ links to click on in order to access booking forms.

If you need any more information or help,Β please contact Miss Watts.

Safeguarding

If you have significant concerns for the welfare of a child, in addition toΒ being able to contact Mrs ColeΒ or Ms Simpson during school hours by emailingΒ safeguarding@millthorpe.southbank.academy, you may wish to make direct contact with theΒ York MASH (Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub)Β on T: 01904 551900, option 3. They operate an out-of-hours service so concerns can be raised with them at any time.
