What I thought I wanted to do: I initially was not sure what I wanted to do, I continued working in my part-time job, I also tried out recruitment for a short period but realised it wasn’t for me. I also applied for the Police, but again it just didn’t feel right. That is when I decided to follow the passion I’d had for years – History, I wanted to inspire pupils to love the subject just like I do!
What I ended up doing: History Teacher
How I got here: After completing my BA (Hons) in History, and going onto complete a Masters in Security, Terrorism and Insurgency at the University of Leeds. I took some time out, before I came across Teach First; a charity run organisation for trainee teachers. In my opinion, the greatest teachers are the ones who inspire you to follow in their footsteps. For me, that was Mr Baybutt. I wouldn’t be where I was today if it wasn’t for his incredible History lessons, I want to inspire pupils the same way he did for me.
Most useful skill or character trait for my job: History subject knowledge, historical skills, essentially a love for the subject.
Top tip! Do whatever you love and enjoy, and you will feel fulfilled in your career whatever you choose.
