In my role as Associate Assistant Principal (Deep Support and Deep Experience) I focus on our vulnerable learners, particularly those in Year 11. We work together to remove any barriers and ensure that these students are equipped with all the tools to help them succeed in their GCSE examinations. We do this through a variety of strands including attendance at school, attendance at appropriate interventions provided in school and supporting them with transition to post-16 destinations, be that college or other sixth form establishments.

Every day is different at Millthorpe! It is a vibrant school with fantastic students and staff alike. There are many wonderful events which the school runs, both inside and outside of the classroom, to give the students the best experience possible. The fact that the staff all enjoy getting involved in these events has a really positive impact on our students.

It is lovely to see a student arrive as an 11-year-old child in Year 7, then grow and develop into a young adult when they leave in Year 11 to pursue further education.

I trained to become a science teacher in Hull, where I went to university. I then returned home to London where I worked in a school for two years, becoming Head of Biology and teaching A-level during my first teaching year. I moved to York in 2017, joining Millthorpe as Second in Department for Science, and then became a Head of Year for three years and Head of KS4 for a year, before moving to Associate Assistant Principal.Β

Keeping fit and active is very important in life and it’s essential to get the right balance between work, my other commitments outside of school. Running, going to the gym and playing football all help me to keep a healthy balance!
