Early closure on B week Wednesday

As next week is a ‘B’ week, a reminder that school will finish at 2.25pm on Wednesday to allow for staff CPD. Please note the new finish time as our school day timings have now changed.

Google Classroom update

At the height of the pandemic, the Government made it mandatory that schools provide remote learning provision for students who were well enough to continue learning but asked to isolate in line with Public Health guidance. It is no longer part of the statutory guidance to continue posting material for students to access online.

As such, from Monday 9 May, teachers will no longer be updating the Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 year group Google Classrooms; these will now be mothballed. Individual teachers will continue to use Google Classroom to post homework and revision material for students in specific groups.

School-wide attendance is moving back very quickly to pre-pandemic levels so it’s no longer an efficient use of teacher time to cover the content during face to face lessons whilst also uploading resources online for such a small number of students. If students are absent from school we encourage them to contact their individual teachers to ask for catch up material and guidance.

Service families

To ensure we are maximising the support we are able to offer to our students and their families, we would like to hear from you if you or a co-parent/carer is currently employed in the services or are retired from the services.

If this applies to you, please drop a quick email to either Miss Maycock or Mrs Cooper, with a note to say which service you belong(ed) to, service dates, your name and your child’s name. Thank you.

Calling all Year 11 parents/carers

We cannot believe that your child’s time at Millthorpe is coming to an end and whilst we support them through their crucial GCSE exams, we are also working really hard behind the scenes to plan special events to celebrate their time with us.

Prom planning is in full swing and we are now also beginning to plan the Leavers Assembly, which will be held in school on Thursday 30 June (exact details TBC – more information to follow).

In time honoured tradition, Year 11 will be welcomed into the Main Hall for their final assembly at Millthorpe…with a twist! We will be asking you to send us some photographs that you would be happy for us to share in the assembly. These could be baby, toddler, primary school or earlier Millthorpe photos, or anything that you would be happy for us to show on the big screen in assembly. Please note, these are photos that you are happy for us to share – your child may not thank you for them!
We ask that you send us a maximum of four photographs so please start thinking about what you might be happy to send in, but please do not send anything in just yet!
We will email you separately with a specific email address to send your photos to. Please do not send anything to the news email address or the school office. We will be in touch again soon!

Year 9 and 10 Iceland trip

For a geographer nothing beats seeing the diversity of the world. With this in mind, we are again proposing to run a Key Stage 4 Geography trip to Iceland. This is not a compulsory element of the GCSE course but it will offer students first-hand experience of features and processes that they can call upon in their final exams (and no doubt beyond).

The proposed trip will take place during the first weekend of the Easter break 2023 although exact timings are still to be confirmed. If you would like your son/daughter to take part, please log in to ParentPay, click the consent form and pay the £100 non-returnable deposit by Friday 20 May.

Further details about the trip can be found here.

Year 8 Flamborough trip

As part of the Key Stage 3 Geography curriculum, we will be taking all Year 8 geographers for a day of field studies to the East Yorkshire coast. Your child will go on the trip on one of the following dates: the North half of the year will go on 13 June and the South half of the year will go on 14 June.

We are asking for a contribution of £15 towards the considerable travel costs and also need parental consent by Wednesday 25 May please.

Further details about the trip can be found here.

A parent and carers guide to loneliness online

Many young people (and adults) spend a lot of time online, but this does not mean that they always feel connected. Sometimes, it can lead to increased feelings of loneliness. This week’s #WakeUpWednesday from National Online Safety explains the causes of loneliness online, gives practical advice about what you can do, and offers further support. Please have a look and share this with your child(ren).

Medicine summer experiences

InvestIN are offering students aged 12-18 exclusive medical experience this summer in world-class hospitals and clinics across London. These will be highly-immersive, supervised by experienced doctors, dentists, vets, psychologists and more.

Further information can be found here.
