A teacher from York is preparing to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks later this month, to raise money for two charities which have helped her mum after she suffered a brain injury.
Anna Lancaster, a Science teacher at Millthorpe School in York, is taking to the Yorkshire hills with a large group of friends on 15 July, when they will attempt to complete the 24-mile Three Peaks Challenge in under 12 hours.
Anna’s mum, Andrea, suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage earlier this year, an extremely dangerous, life-threatening condition that results in bleeding both within and around the brain.
Anna said “There are usually no warning signs with subarachnoid haemorrhages and they can happen at any age, but are most common in people aged between 45 and 70. It was such a shock that someone who seemed so well could face this life-changing event.”
“When Mum was taken ill back in April, she was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge where she underwent life-saving brain surgery. She received incredible, world class care and support at the neurology unit at Addenbrooke’s and quite simply, without them, she would not be here today.
“Mum still has a long and challenging recovery ahead of her. For survivors, a brain injury can lead to a wide range of difficulties in day-to-day life and the more severe the injury, the longer-term and more pronounced the effects are likely to be. We all think ‘it will never happen to me’, but every year around 350,000 people are admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury.
“Mum is now receiving support through Headway, an incredible charity which works to improve life after brain injury by providing vital support and information services.”
Anna and her friends will be taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for both the Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust and Headway, two incredible organisations that have made it possible for Andrea to rebuild her life.
